Every year, the monstrous gadget show in Las Vegas, Nevada known as the Consumer Electronics Show gives the public a preview of forthcoming technology. From in-home three dimensional television sets to touchscreens that span entire walls, CES is every gadget hound's wildest dream. So without further delay, here are my picks for the best gadgets of CES 2010. I'll leave the TVs and mobile phones to the proper professionals and give you a run down on the gadgets:
Kodak Slice digital camera - As the first touchscreen camera from Kodak, it also boasts an above average 14 megapixels, 720p video recording, and facial recognition. The real standout feature, however, is the incredibly thin profile; at under an inch thick, the $350 Slice is a camera you'll actually want to put in your pocket. More info.
Polaoid PIC-1000 - Admittedly not something you'll want to put in your pocket, the PIC-1000 marks the return of the famous Polariod instant film. Thanks to the efforts of the Impossible Project [link] and in conjunction with Lady Gaga, you'll be able to take a much needed trip back to a time when developing pictures meant shaking them, rather than posting them on a social network.
Nyko Wand+ - If you are one of the million owners of the Nintendo Wii, you've probably seen the Wii motion plus add-on. While it adds more accurate motion sensing capabilities, it unfortunately adds extraneous bulk to the svelte Wii remote- not to mention it retails for $20 and some games require it. Enter Nyko and its Wand+ which packs all the functionality of a Wii remote and the Wii motion plus add-on, minus the bulk and cost. Looks like its game set match for Nyko in this round of Wii Tennis. Mad Catz R.A.T. mouse - Although it looks more like a Transformer than something you control your PC with, the R.A.T. mouse is truly one of a kind. In the rear of its metal chassis is a detachable allen wrench that allows you to tweak the grips and moulding of the mouse to your exact specifications. Need a little more speed in your Call of Duty match? Just take out some of the removable weights. Mouse moving too fast for that headshot? Just hold down the red "sniper" button to temporarily slow down the cursor. Available this spring starting at $50 for the base model and $130 for the wireless premium edition. More Info.
Alienware m11x netbook - While the aesthetics may be love-or-hate, Dell's gamer-centric forray into the burgeoning netbook market is being advertised as the "most powerful Sub 12 inch gaming laptop in the universe". After reading its specs, which include 1 gigabyte of graphics RAM, you'd be hard pressed to disagree. The m11x also has a mode that lets you instantly dial back the energy-hungry processing power when all you need to do is send a few emails. Perhaps the best part about this gaming rig is its $1000 price tag. If you're feeling lucky, you can even try to win one at Alienware's mini-site here.
Last but not least, for anyone who is a fan of interfaces, the small Isreali company, Emblaze Mobile, showed off a smartphone concept powered by Linux set to redefine the smart phone market with its intuitive control schemes inspired by the film Minority Report. Check out a video of it here.
