HTC have announced the release of there new handset, the Legend, a replacement for their popular Hero model, hoping the improvements on this new addition will not only pick up where the hero left off, but also propel this new phone to the front of the pack.

The first thing that strikes you about the overall look of the HTC Legend is its slick aluminium finish. This has replaced the perhaps more harder wearing teflon finish of the Hero, and although this new design is perhaps more prone to scratching, it does undoubtedly give the phone a very much more "expensive" look. Measuring 112 x 56.3 x 11.5 mm the handset sits nicely in your hand and weighs in at a fairly impressive 126 grammes. The 3.2" AMOLED screen is a capacitive touch screen displaying a resolution of 320 x 480. As you would expect from a screen of this nature, the screen is responsive, and although smaller than the offering on the HTC Desire, it still is very clear and shows a good range of colours. Beneath the screen an optical mouse is incorporated into the aluminium shell. The incorporation of the antenna into battery door means that the metal body of the Legend does not interfere with signal.

A 5 million pixel camera is built in to the phone giving a clear quality photograph. For darker scenes the inclusion of an LED flash is a plus point, and autofocus helps keep snaps crystal clear. GeoTagging is also catered for. As is pretty much standard now, video capture is also supported. Just like on the new HTC Desire the multimedia element of the phone is much improved. Playback of audio tracks is easy, with skipping of songs simply done by swiping your finger across the device. A 3.5mm headphone jack allows you to plug your own headphones into the handset for a better musical experience. Connectivity is generally very good with mini USB and Bluetooth both catered for.

Although lacking the overall power of the Snapdragon Processor, the 600Mhz Qualcomm processor works well and gives a quick loading and navigation between the various menus on the HTC Legend. The excellent Android 2.1OS is also included, and combined with the superb Sense user interface makes using the legend a real pleasure. A good example of this is the new "Leap" feature. By pinching your fingers together on the home screen a simple overview of all 7 main menus is displayed, allowing you to simply choose the one you require. Other nice touches include the Friendstream, which groups all of your friends social networking updates neatly together in one place.

The HTC Legend looks to be a really desirable phone. The striking looks are going to be the thing that catches most peoples attention, but the excellent user interface and operating system will make this handset incredibly popular.

The HTC Legend and the HTC Desire are coming soon.
